These are the IPE experiences in which both nursing and medical students participate.
Difficult Discussions Workshop
Third year nursing students (Pediatric Nursing) and third year medical students (Ambulatory Internal Medicine Clerkship) role play an end of life discussion with a family member of a terminally ill patient.

Simulation Lab
Fourth year nursing students (Medical-Surgical Nursing), 2nd year CNL students (Capstone), and third year medical students (Perioperative & Acute Care Medicine Clerkship) participate collaboratively in a simulated patient care experience..

Clinical Connections Day: Witnessing Suffering
Third year nursing students with third year medical students and chaplains spend a day in open discussion about suffering, how they have witnessed it; includes viewing a Greek tragedy drama followed by personal accounts of suffering.

Honor Committee Mock Trials
Honor Committee, including all schools of UVA present mock trials that replicate most of the processes of an actual honor trial.
Fall 2011
Venipuncture/ central line teaching
Nursing students teaching first year medical students how to start and maintain a peripheral IV line, clean, assess and care for various central venous lines.
Spring and Fall, 2011
Urinary catheter placement and management
Nursing students teach first year medical students about placement and care of male and female indwelling urinary catheters.
Spring 2011, yearly
Basic Patient Care Skills Course
Fourth year and graduate nursing students teach 3rd year medical students IV placement and care, foley placement and care, ECG and central line management

Remote Area Medicine (RAM)
Nursing and medical students participate in patient care at a three-day clinic in Wise County, VA. These services include internal medicine, medical subspecialties, emergency services, simple dermatological surgeries, x-ray, gynecology, etc.

Clinical Performance Development: Phase 1
Interprofessional teams of instructors including physicians, nurses, chaplains, and social workers teach assessment, history taking skills and communication to first year medical students.

Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Open School UVa Chapter
Medical and nursing students lead a quality improvement project; may expand to include other Schools at the University

Developing IPE Experiences
Role-play: Pediatric home-based care of a child with cerebral palsy
Third and fourth year nursing students, CNL students, with medical students will role play the complexities of caring for and discharging a child to home with a complex medical condition. This will include communication skills with family and home health agencies
2012
Role play: Geriatric case of Alzheimer’s/ dementia
Third and fourth year nursing students, second year CNL students with medical students will role play the complexities associated with caring for a patient with Alzheimer’s / dementia. The complicated family roles and interprofessional care needed to support both the patient and their caregivers are addressed.
